About the author

Stephen Hall (Shall) studied painting at the Allen R. Hite Art Institute of the University of Louisville with Mary Spencer Nay, noted painter, distinguished professor of art education and wife of painter, photographer, and muralist, Lou Block. Mr. Block, who worked with Diego Rivera on the infamous murals for Rockefeller Center, introduced Shall to the artist who would have the most influence on his future career, Ben Shahn. The themes, colors, techniques and graphic impact of Mr. Shahn’s work is clearly present, yet interpreted anew, in Shall’s artwork and graphic design.   He studied graphic design with Robert J. Doherty, Chairman of the Fine Arts Department for the University of Louisville, and later, Director of George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. Doherty introduced Hall to the graphic work of Victor Hammer and his wife, Carolyn, at Transylvania University and University of Kentucky, respectively.   Following the examples of Block and Shahn, as well as other noted modern masters, such as Japer Johns and Andy Warhol, Shall began his art career in the graphic arts. Clients have included The White House, US Department of State, Americorps, The Embassy of Spain, Office of the Secretary of Defense, US Naval Academy, and Fortune 500 companies.    A seventh generation native of Henry County, Kentucky Hall lives in Tucson, Arizona and Frederick, Maryland.
