About the author

Wendell George Brown received his MFA in Painting / Sculpture from Howard University in Washington, DC and his BFA in Fibers / Crafts from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. Brown, former assistant to America artist Faith Ringgold is an Assistant Professor of Art at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. A summery of exhibitions include: The Japan International Quilt Show Yokohama, Japan; The State Department: Dubai, The United Arab Emirates; American Folk Art Museum: New York, New York; The Florence Museum of Art: Florence, South Carolina; The Virginia Quilt Museum: Harrisonburg, Virginia and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum: Baltimore, Maryland. Described as "A Risk Taker in Art ” by The New York Times, Brown works examine ways African Americans throughout a complicated yet consequential history in the United States employed the practice of quilt making and Negro spirituals to prevail over depressed conditions. Brown says of his work, “Art is the catalyst that allows me to open subjects for discussion. I hope that this discussion will direct us all to see the commonality in humanity“.
