Official artist for 2010 expedition studying the Giant Pacific Octopus with: Prof. David Scheel Alaska Octopus Project Alaska Pacific University Have done several exhibits at the Hayward Shoreline Wetland Center in Hayward, California. these included development of educational components working with kids to help them interact with and better understand the environment we all live in. This included working with The Girl Scouts of America. Following is a letter they sent me after the program. January 24, 2011 To Whom it May Concern: My name is Nicole Jones and I am the Community Development Director for the Girl Scouts of Northern California. I service Outreach areas of Richmond and Oakland. Girl Scouts of Northern California has a wonderful program called Green By Nature which was developed by our environmental arm, Girl Scouts Save the Bay. It has a robust program that engages students and their families in issues of environmental education, stewardship and action! Our three-meeting program motivates students to learn about the importance of the bay and her watershed and what they can do to make sure she stays healthy. Another important factor in our program is getting students out into nature so that they want to access our beautiful bay and open space on their own. They also learn about water conservation, recycling, litter and pollution, In collaboration with The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center we connected with Will Tait and his wife Rebecca Fogg with their nature program that fit perfectly with ours. Their Art of Nature program helped the girls learn techniques of nature photography. The girls went on a field trip to The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center where they learned about wildlife and their habitats depending on the health of the bay. The ShopBot CNC machine Mr. Tait uses in his shop made it possible to make the life size bird and animal templates that the girls used for their drawings. Will & Rebecca facilitated 3 meetings and the girls were completely engaged and thoroughly overjoyed to be able to draw and trace the birds and other animals they learned about at the Hayward Shoreline. They were a great asset to our program in dealing with girls who have never been given this opportunity. Some of the Outreach area girls that I service have never even been out of the comforts of their city to get the chance to experience our wonderful Bay. I appreciate Will and Rebecca for their program, their patience and expertise. I would recommend this program to any affiliations I have servicing youth and adults. Sincerely Nicole A.
