Bruce Lieberman grew up in the suburbs of Long Island, before they really became the suburbs. Deeply rooted in the New York Figurative art world, Lieberman began to show on the Lower East Side. Living on the east end since the 70's, surfing in Montauk in the morning and at New York openings in the evening his work became a joyous ode to living.

Lieberman studied in Brandeis with Georges and received an MFA from Brooklyn College, when Pearlstein, Bob Henry and Lennart Anderson were there. He had already begun exhibiting in New York and had his first one man show at Pene Du Bois Gallery in the East Village. In the 80s under the “Narrative Painting” banner, he had gained the friendship and respect of the figurative community as a “painters painter,” but he felt relatively ignored by the critics. His wit and robust energetic attack set him apart. In 1990 he moved to, and lives currently full time in the Hamptons surfing and painting on the eastern end of Long Island. It is here he became associated with the landscape tradition/movement after being included as the youngest painter in the book 20th century Long Island Landscape Painting, Ronald G. Pisano, New York Graphic Society,Little, Brown Date Published:1990 .
