Lines have been the formal foundation of almost all my art, in both works on paper and in sculpture. In the series “Intersections”, each drawing is built on a foundation of a continuing arc with the initial charcoal stick or pencil not leaving the paper. This is repeated with other tools, even an eraser and a damp sponge. Then, attention is paid to every intersection of those lines. The lines are intersected, interrupted, redirected, or doubled, or darkened, or a sharp angle is curved, hopefully to evoke an emotional response, much like music when an unexpected chord or series of notes is especially soulful or exciting. And like life. Sometimes straight lines are added, for contrast with the arcs, and to create more intersections. When color is added, the colors adhere to a simple palette, anchored around what I call “taxicab yellow”.
