As a wildlife artist specializing in birds, I am excited to share my vision through creativity and beauty.
I would like others to see my passion for wildlife that I create through the universal medium of art.
I love color, texture, shape, and line. I try to express my interest in these items by starting out with a strong layout. I enjoy repeating positive and negative space shapes to help create a consistent image.
I have also fostered an interest for an impasto look. My latest collection I am creating "Ugly Pretty" uses an impasto look and feel to add texture and depth to my pieces. In this collection you will find roseate spoonbills in different acts of play, feeding, sunning, and the daily activities of these wetland / shorebirds.
Painting the personalities of birds, feather details, landscapes, and how light, color, and weather affect the images overall, mood is then transitioned to the viewer. I want to share the beauty of the animals that I see during my many trips to visit wildlife, as well as the lands in which they live.
My journey though art began in early. Born in 1972, I grew up in the small town of Stockbridge Georgia. I began learning art from my mom who had been a commercial artist for many years.
I remember bringing my drawings to my mother to see what she thought. I always admired the things she could draw at the drop of a hat. I would give her the drawing, and she would use tracing paper to show me where to make corrections or start over. Then she would crumple up the tracing paper, and tell me to try again. I found it very frustrating at the time, but I believe it made my technical skills all for the better.
I studied art in high school with Gregg Green, then studied with Tommy Daughtry at Clayton State for fine arts. A bit of changing majors from fine art to commercial art, then to interactive design at the Art Institute of Atlanta gave me a greater artistic proficiency. Over the years, I have found what I enjoy most however is painting. I have and always will paint as much as I can.
During my college years, I painted commercially doing large murals along business walls inside and out. I gained entry into fine art competitions, as well as gaining a clients that love my work.
After college, I chose to try a few different mediums. Everything from digital art, colored pencil, pen and ink, to scratch board with water color. Eventually I gravitated back to oils as this is my preferred method of creating 2 dimensional art.
I have painted for many years after my initial training. I have sold to clients and collectors, and I have participated in shows.I am branching out to galleries as well as an online presence to garner further interest into my art as well as the subject matter.
Currently I am creating shore and wetland birds across the nations, starting with America. I wish to share these beautiful animals with everyone I meet.
Many of the birds I paint include, but are not limited to, species that have been on the endangered list, or currently are endangered. Whether the birds are on the list or not, I would like to bring about awareness that we should preserve our beautiful natural resources as well as share a worldwide understanding of their irreplaceable value. By bringing about interest, it is possible that we will take care of our national treasures, rather than allow them to come to environmental and human harm.
