Angela Sharkey is an American mixed media artist with a very diverse background. A professional artist for over 25 years, Angela has a background in graphic design, fine art, art curating, and art licensing.
She creates brilliantly colorful and imaginative paintings using several different mediums in her work as she captures an energy and texture on her canvases. Painting on both small and large sized canvases her works are graphic and whimsical in nature. Drawing on her abundant memories of travels and a life of moving around the world she imbues these visions in her paintings and tells us a story through her art.
Her balance of design, line, and color in her paintings is a reflection of her graphic design background. Her process of painting with acrylics, oil, oil pastel, and artist tissue paper on the canvas creates layers of textural interest along with her symbolic and gestural mark-making. Her paintings have a tactile texture; inviting the viewer in to take a deeper look.
Born in Chicago, Illinois I grew up in Wisconsin where art has always been an integral part of my life and I have been creating art in some form since an early age.
I studied graphic design at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and I worked as a graphic designer in both the USA, Germany, and Italy. Working in the design and advertising industry gave me a structural base for my work as an artist and I gained valuable experiences that continue to influence me today. I have been involved with many forms of art, I have worked in graphic design, fine art, art curating, and I created my own line of fine art greeting cards AS Designs.
My art has transformed greatly over the years and I enjoy many different mediums from watercolor, acrylic, oil, and mixed media. Pushing my boundaries and experimenting as an artist I really enjoy melding paint and graphic design together, which always leaves me wondering what I can create next.
As an art curator at the US Embassy Tri-Mission Art Gallery in Rome, Italy from 2012-2014 my views on the art world were broadened as I worked with many international artists. Working with a team we organized, promoted, and curated several group and solo exhibits at the gallery. To promote the artist exhibits I also did free lance graphic design work. Working closely with other artists was very beneficial and a vital part of growing as an individual artist. This experience has influenced and enriched my work immensely.
I have lived abroad in France, Italy, Belgium, Hungary, and Germany. I have participated in prestigious group, juried, and solo exhibits in the USA, Belgium, and Italy and my paintings are in private collections in the USA and throughout Europe.
