In February and March Sandra spent two months making art and giving talks on papermaking in Beijing and Mianyang, China. At an artist residency outside of Sydney, Australia; Hansen became the very first person ever, to make paper from the Wollemi Pine tree. She has been to China four times, including a solo show at the Inner Mongolia Art Museum, three artist residencies, and taught a two-day paper making workshop in Beijing. Hansen has been to India on 13 trips to exhibit, teach, paint, and participate in artist residencies. Sandra earned her graduate and undergraduate degrees in Painting at Kendall College of Art and Design. She received the Excellence in Painting Award and the Portfolio Award while there.
Sandra’s art is all about plastics and pollutants in the water. She switched from oil painting to handmade paper in 2015 when she read about thousands of fish dying in Lake Erie from agricultural runoff. Handmade paper is an extremely sustainable form of art that doesn’t damage the earth in the process of making it, or as it decays. Her art is about the natural beauty of water and the dichotomy of artificial materials inhabiting the same space.
