Barbara Milman is a book artist, printmaker, and mixed media artist. She has had over 25 solo exhibitions, many in University and public venues, and has been included in hundreds of group shows throughout the United States.

Barbara Milman’s handmade artist books can be found in the special collections of dozens of university libraries and museums, such as Stanford, Yale, the Getty Museum, the Chicago Art Institute, the Cleveland Art Institute, UCLA, UC Davis, the University of Southern California, the University of the Maryland Institute College of Art & Design, and the IUPU Herron School of Art. Her prints and other artwork are included in public collections, including the Zimmerli Museum at Rutgers University, the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, and the Art Museum at Yad Vashem, Israel.

Milman’s prints are an unusual composite of traditional relief printmaking and newer digital techniques. Many of her recent prints, for example, have collaged digital elements that were printed on archival inkjet paper. The prints also incorporate other non-traditional elements, such as text made with hand stamped metal type, or prints made from polymer lithographic plates created on the computer.

The techniques used in the prints and the books overlap, with images and techniques from one medium being transposed into the other. Both the books and the prints usually start as linocuts. For the books, Milman makes digital images of the linocuts and combines them on the computer with digital photographs. Additional design elements are added in PhotoShop. The pages are printed with an inkjet printer on archival art paper, hand printed linocuts and collage may be added, and then they are assembled into limited edition handmade books.

Among the many awards she has received are the National Association of Women Artists’ Medal of Honor & Elizabeth Morse Genius Award in 1994 and the Stelly Sterling Award for prints in 2004 and 1994. She was awarded a fellowship at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley in 2000, and has been an artist-in-residence at the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts in Greece, at the Palenville Interarts Colony in New York, and the Red Cinder Creativity Center in Hawaii in 2007, and at the Kala Institute.

Publications of her work include a book of 65 linocuts about the Holocaust, Light in the Shadows (Jonathan David Publishers, Inc, 1997) and a book of her prints and Victoria Sullivan’s poems, Alzheimer’s Dreams (Red Parrot Press, 2002). She recently published Zoe’s Journal (Red Parrot Press, 2009), a trade paperback version of an original handmade fictional diary in the style of an illuminated manuscript. Her work is included in The Best of Printmaking: An International Collection (1997), and in many other books and journals.

Barbara Milman is active in many professional organizations. She is a former president of the California Society of Printmakers, and currently serves on its board of directors. She was a member of the National Association of Women Artists for many years. She received her BA degree from Harvard College, and a JD from Columbia University School of Law.
