I earned a Bachelors degree in art from the University of Maryland in 1983. After spending many years exploring creative quiltmaking, an art form that has taught me a great deal about color, composition and texture, I began in 2004 painting with acrylics. I am now working in a studio space at Liberty Town Arts Workshop in Fredericksburg, VA and showing my work in galleries, outdoor art shows and juried shows.
I paint out of a love for what I see. Houses have been a favorite subject for many years. I love the intimate way an open window speaks. Frequently I paint just a fragment of the house, a door and a couple windows. The scale is small, personal and intentionally inviting. I am also captivated by the feeling of freedom in an open landscape and my art truly lies somewhere in the dichotomy between narrow, domestic scenes and expansive landscapes. I try to paint in the way the eye sees, loosely, casually sliding over the peripheral parts. I want the physical presence of the paint to assert itself to some degree and enjoy painting with free, gestural brushwork.
