Carrie Scanga makes etchings, drawings, and sculptural installations from delicate hand-printed paper. Born in rural Pennsylvania, she studied printmaking as an undergraduate at Bryn Mawr College and went on to receive the MFA in printmaking from University of Washington in Seattle. She currently has a studio in Maine where she also teaches at Bowdoin College.
Carrie Scanga’s work has been exhibited at venues around the globe, including this year at the Janet Turner Print Museum in Chico, California, Golden Parachutes in Berlin, Germany, Rose Contemporary in Portland, Maine, Space 1026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and many university art museums, including those of University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of Colorado, Nicholls State University, Murray State University, Utah State University, and the University of Central Florida. Her recent solo exhibitions have been at the Lawndale Art Center in Houston, Texas (2012), the St. Louis Craft Alliance in Missouri (2011), the Salina Art Center in Kansas (2010), Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Philadelphia (2010), and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia (2009.)
Numerous awards have supported the development of her work, including two consecutive Winter Fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, a Fellowship grant and two Special Opportunity Stipends from the New York Foundation for the Arts, residencies at the European Ceramic Work Centre, The MacDowell Colony, the Blue Mountain Center, Fundación Valparaíso, Sculpture Space, Artspace, and the Salina Art Center, and grants from the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation and the Pollock Krasner Foundation.
