Dalani Tanahy has been a part of the Hawaiian traditional arts revival for over twenty years and specializes in Hawaiian kapa or bark cloth which is made from the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree. Along with the kapa are all the attendant arts to making that kapa, which include wood, gourd and stone work as well as horticulture and an understanding of the native traditional aesthetic of creating and decorating. The art of kapa in Hawaii was "put aside" and by the 1900s had ceased to become a locally manufactured product. As a practitioner, Dalani has helped recreate this art in the traditional way while adding her own vision. As a teacher, she has helped make sure the art is not put aside again, and that it remains in the public eye and mind.
