Deborah Aschheim makes installations, sculptures and drawings based on invisible worlds of memory, communication, transportation and information. She has mapped networks of video and light across gallery and museum spaces to replicate the fragile, intimate lattice of her own neural networks, and she collaborated with musicians to create sound sculptures that play original music based on her favorite words. Most recently, she has been searching for collective memory in the public spaces of architecture and history, building misremembered ghost cities from memory and working with communities to explore intersections of memory and place.
Aschheim has had solo exhibitions across the United States and internationally, including Oficina de Proyectos Culturales in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Barrick Museum at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Suyama Space in Seattle, San Diego State University Art Gallery, the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles and Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach, CA. She has created permanent public artworks for the University of California, San Francisco; for Amazon.com in Seattle, WA; for the City of Sacramento and for the Los Angeles Police Department, as well as temporary public art installations at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Los Angeles International Airport, the Wellcome Trust in London.
Awards include residencies at The MacDowell Colony; Headlands Center for the Arts; Bemis Center and the Roswell, NM Artist-in-Residence program, Hellman Visiting Artist Fellowship at the Memory and Aging Center in the Neurology Department at UCSF and artists’ fellowships from the California Community Foundation, the City of Los Angeles and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Aschheim lives in Pasadena, CA.
