I have always been captivated by the beauty of nature and wilderness. I spent the summers of my youth wherever my father’s work as a geologist took us, usually deep in a mountain range in the desert. I loved to watch the slow change of light and weather during the day, and the flow of stars across the night sky. Later, as I traveled throughout the West on my own, I found photography to be the perfect way to capture some of that luminous beauty.

That was the statement I wrote in about 2008, and I still agree with it, but since then irresistible opportunities have taken me in some new directions. A desire to photograph an endangered Bay Area landmark led to unprecedented access to Moffett Field and NASA/Ames Research Center. A life-long curiosity for cultures and history, and a lucky friendship led to a photographic opportunities in Yemen and Egypt. A desire to tell the story of the land and people of Yemen in more detail caused me to begin writing about my experience there. Decades of experience in the field and experimentation in the darkroom have given me the tools to take advantage of these opportunities. I love the chance to stretch out creatively, and also love the chance to photograph in unfamiliar places. I plan to continue combining the two as often as possible. I am largely self taught through reading, collaboration and experimentation, and have received valuable knowledge and inspiration from study with John Sexton, Ray MacSavaney, Brigitte Carnochan, and Mark Nelson.

The images I have submitted reflect a number of larger portfolios that can be viewed on my web site.
