Emily Barletta is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, holding a BFA in Fiber Arts and now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in 2009 and a Pollock-Krasner Grant in 2011. Her work has been praised in The New York Times, Th Washington Post, Baltimore CityPaper, The Village Voice, City Arts Magazine, American Craft Magazine, Fiberarts Magazine, and Foam Magazine.
Barletta’s repetitive gestures, marks, and shape building techniques accumulate and combine in mass to create larger works. Each object she makes is to be viewed as a physical container instilled with the memories and experiences that occurred while it was being made. Through her art she builds imaginary machines that organically grow to reference patternmaking, weaving, walls, mountains, flesh, blood, cells, plants, topography, molds, and diseases.
