Janis Sweeney is a painter and printmaker working in the Washington DC area. Inspiration for her recent work comes from the natural landscape, the invasion of modern development found within it, and the cycle of man-nature progression of reclamation that controls it. Gentrification, boom-to-bust transformation brought about by economic shifts offer her opportunities to bring to the canvas and paper liminal moments in the lifecycle of place. These abstracted landscapes are an invitation to reflect upon how we as a society have affected and continue to alter the natural environment around us. They call us to consider what these places are, imagine what they were, and envision what they will be. Sweeney received her B.F.A., with Departmental Honors, from George Mason University and holds a B.S. in Computer Systems from Park University. She is owner/operator of Quarter Moon Press, a small intaglio and screen print shop in Arlington, VA. She has exhibited her paintings and prints nationally and internationally and her work can be found in private and public collections.
