Emily Kimball (born in Colorado, 1975) lives and works between Santa Fe and Santa Barbara. She is a self-taught artist, working primarily in painting and sculpture. Her most recent work, fearless sculptural installations in hand-sculpted cast resin, explore the nature of individuality in the face of societal conformity, and self-determination as a vehicle for the realization of one’s aspirations. In her most recent works, swarms of lithe, doll-like bathers clad in vintage swimming attire swoop and dive through the air in a haphazard choreography. While most have been cast in a drab monochrome grey, a small number of vibrantly hued swimmers emerge, triumphantly independent from others. These works play on tensions of kinetic movement and shadow, but are also an ode to the search for one’s own uniqueness.
Kimball has recently exhibited at Box Gallery (Santa Fe) and Yares Art Projects (Santa Fe), and Niman Fine Art (Santa Fe), as well as Judy Chicago’s Through The Flowers project (Belen) and Gerald Peters Gallery (Santa Fe). She has also exhibited widely at art fairs, including Aspen Art Fair, Art Hamptons, and Miami Art Basel.
