A Native Washingtonian Hampton R. Olfus, Jr. creates works of art, that are direct links to, African, Native American , and European styles. Mr. Olfus works in many different media, to challenge his creativity, and to entertain the viewer. Most of the art pieces are very detailed, and sculptural in appearance. The pen & ink drawings have been referenced to be, artistic jewels, adorning the walls of art collectors world wide. The Washington Post says ,” Jamaica: A Visual Odyssey”, an exhibit of Olfus’s vacation inspired paintings, capture the island in so many different moods, and employ so many different styles and media, that it’s hard to believe the 14 paintings were all done by the same hand.
Hampton started his diverse professional art career, while still in college and working a full time job, at the Post Office. Studying drawing, painting, and taking a concentrated interest in advertising art, illustration, and art history. College and work ethics, through the 1970’s and 80’s afforded him the skills, and financial security, needed to advance his artistic career . Olfus’s diverse art career of over 30 years, is a integral part of his life, by way of expression, vision, education and communication. His art reflects his formal training and personal studies.
In 1988 Hampton and Susan Olfus, established an arts & craft home based business “HOSO Creations” which is still in operation. Hampton and Susan, relocated to Charleston, SC, in May 2009. Upon his arrival in Charleston, SC. Hampton entered ,the 2009 Moja Festivals Juried Art Exhibit, his entry won the third place award.
Hampton is also an exhibiting member, of the Charleston Artist Guild, a prestigious art organization established in 1953. Hampton was elected to the office of Co-President by the art organization B.A.M.N.N’, which was founded in 2010, by a group of established artist living in South Carolina. His guiding philosophy “Let art be art, fresh and new,,, no egos or selfish wants, just the artist,,, pure spirit.”
