I began drawing at age ten, immediately after arrival in the U.S. from Budapest, Hungary in 1956. Later I enrolled in figure drawing classes at The Art Students’ League before attending Pratt Institute.
By the early 1990‘s my painting had evolved from literal interpretation to a nearly abstract but still figurative style using precisely controlled textures in very sparse compositions without lines or definite edges. This approach became for me a search for a visual language with which to explore and describe the nature of primordial impulses and archetypes. Keeping my interest in the primordial, I have recently began a series of large mixed media drawings on canvas. In these works I am also investigating the graphic nature of two dimensional work with an emphasis on line. These canvases are precursors to a sculpture series.
