The urban landscape has been the focus of my artwork since I moved from New York City to Maryland in 2003. While living in New York, I was an illustrator and graphic artist for more than 20 years. I now paint full time and exhibit regularly in the Washington, DC region and the northeast. I am currently represented by Marin-Price Galleries (Chevy Chase, MD), Fraser Gallery (Bethesda, MD), and Main Street Gallery (Annapolis, MD), as well as two corporate art firms, Boston Art (Boston, MA) and Art Matters (Glen Echo, MD).
In exploring the cityscape theme, I'm fascinated by the endless patterns of colors and shadows produced by the changing light throughout the day and even at different times of the year. My goal is not to document a particular city or view but rather I manipulate shapes and shadows to create striking compositions. The colors are exaggerated, the surfaces are simplified, and architectural features are rearranged or eliminated. My work often combines realistic and abstract elements, and I find this contrast really interesting. My preferred medium is oil, but I also use photography, drawing, gouache, and collage to create urban landscapes.
Over the past decade, I have received the following awards and grants: Bethesda Painting Awards, MD (Finalist, 2016 and 2011; 2nd Place Award, 2005); Edward Hopper House Art Center, NY, “Small Matters of Great Importance: Light and Shadow,” Honorable Mention (2015); Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County, MD, Individual Artist Grant (2010); and Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award for Visual Arts: Painting (2010, 2008 2006). In addition, my work was selected by New American Paintings, Southern Competition #88, 2009 (published June/July 2010).
I have had a number of solo shows in Maryland at Artists & Makers Studios (2017), Marin-Price Galleries (2016, 2014, 2012, 2011), and Gallery Neptune (2010, 2008, 2007). The Fraser Gallery has exhibited my work at the Affordable Art Fair New York City (2007-2015), Architecture Home Design Show, New York City (2013), Bridge Art Fair—Wynwood, Miami (2008), Boston International Art Fair (2009-2011), and Red Dot Art Fair—Wynwood, Miami (2009).
My work is included in the following corporate and nonprofit art collections: Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers, Washington, DC (commission); DC Council on the Arts and Humanities (Art Bank), Washington, DC; Garvey Schubert Barer, Washington, DC; National Association of Home Builders, Washington, DC; Rowe Chiropractic Offices, New York, NY (commission); Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP, Washington, DC; and The Pinkard Group, Bethesda, MD (commission).
