Julie Karabenick was born in Evanston, IL, and grew up in Cleveland, OH. She received a BA and a PhD (Developmental Psychology) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, where she has lived since 1965. Karabenick’s work explores balance and tension, symmetry and asymmetry, and complex color relations in a geometric idiom. She has been exhibiting her paintings and prints for over 30 years. She has had solo exhibitions in Ann Arbor, Chicago and New York City, and has taken part in over 60 group exhibitions. Karabenick is also a curator and writer, and is the editor of the online scholarly art project, Geoform (www.geoform.net), which explores the use of geometric form and structure in contemporary abstract art.
