Collage Works
Rochester, MN
Compelled to draw and create with my hands since childhood, I’ve formed things from aluminum foil, fabrics, yeast dough, dryer lint, yarns and music. A nurse by education, a pianist and teacher by trade, and with no formal art training, I have found the medium of collage works best for me as a visual artist.
Frustrated with my inability to finish several languishing watercolors I had begun, I thought of gluing papers over them. The result was a joyful, vibrant, textural feast for the eyes that so delighted me I’ve continued the process for some 14 years now.
I enjoy the process of getting an idea for a piece, thinking of the colors I want to use, digging through my boxes of scrap papers, fibers, small objects and fabrics. I am inspired by the feel of the materials, the visual textures, the gluey mess on my hands and by entering the emerging “world” and story of each new piece.
My work process is unpredictable with unexpected results: I may have a general idea of what I want to portray, but the end product is always a surprise.
I find deep satisfaction in creating and “painting” with paper. Whether showing a playful or more serious story, I hope my work brings joy and pleasure to the viewer.
My work may be viewed at the SEMVA cooperative art gallery in downtown Rochester, MN.
