Luyi Xu was born in a province in Southern China and currently lives in the United States. She earned her Master of Fine Art in Painting and Printmaking from Yale School of Art.

In her work, she focuses on the study of power relationships and the ideological impact of inhumane conditions and social psychology. This furthers her exploration into the problems of gender and human equality.
