I am originally from England and first came to the US on a Fullbright exchange. The core of my art practice is as a semi-abstract, semi-representational studio painter, though I also make some 3D work, some prints, and public art.
In 2017 I made an installation featuring a lifesize boat for The Crocker Art Museum, and subsequently boat images have dominated my recent paintings. I like the accessibility of their universal symbolism, and I enjoy hearing the various meanings that people attach to them.
Prior to the boats the pervasive imagery in my work was a mix of figures, buildings, and symbolic animals. I travel as much as possible and experiencing other cultures has led me to value these universally understandable images. Whatever the images, I'm always very conscious of painterly concerns such as color, composition, surfaces, and marks.
