Margaret Lampe Kannenstine is an artist whose landscapes, still lifes, and paintings of jazz musicians in performance are centered on the expressive use of color. Her acrylic paintings and works on paper have been shown frequently and widely for decades, and are held in the permanent collections of the Columbus Museum of Art in Columbus, OH, TheSpringfield Art Museum in Springfield MO, the Hood Museum in Hanover NH, and the Fleming Museum in Burlington VT. Margaret’s paintings are also in hospitals, academic institutions, corporate collections, and numerous private collections around the country.
Margaret (Peggy) is past Secretary of the Board of Directors of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies. In 2005 she Co-Chaired the Vermont Arts Council 40th Anniversary celebrations. She was reelected to the VAC Board of Trustees, and served as Chair for two years. Peggy served on the Vermont Council on Culture and Innovation (VCCI) which studied policy issues of the Creative Economy for our state. She has frequently been a panelist on these issues. She is a past Board member of New England Foundation for the Arts; was twice President of her local arts council, Pentangle. In 2005 she was invited to participate in the White House mini-conference on Creativity and Aging, held at the National Endowment for the Arts. Peggy also served as Chair of the Board of Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT, and is now on the founding Board of the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Jct. VT.

. In September 2008 she was awarded the “Distinguished Public Service Award” by National Assembly of State Arts Agencies.
Over the years, Margaret has found the solitude of the studio and the work she does with other people in community creates a balance in her life that works well for her. She has maintained this sort of combined way of working since her days in Arts School at Washington University (in St. Louis, her place of birth). Living, as she does now, on a New England farm increases her life-long sense of connection with the land and its many beauties.
