I was born and brought up in Pakistan. From there I completed my undergraduate degree in Textile Design and after a few years of teaching art and doing free lance work I came to the US. I enrolled in the graduate program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and will soon graduate in May 2010 with a Masters in Fine Arts Degree.
The drawings and installations that I make are about my personal narrative that is expressed through abstraction. Both drawings and installations share the same subject matter but are expressed though different images and media. Installations reflect the idea of looking at cultures with two perspectives and the drawings reflect the idea of space and everyday experiences.
The two perspectives in the installations are the perspective of looking at cultures through observation and memory. These ways of looking represent my transference from one culture to another, hence the experience of being part of a Diaspora. Diaspora is the overarching idea in my work, within that I incorporate the idea of space and travel through architectural patterns and images that I find in my visual environment.
