Sara Bakken is an award-winning Philadelphia based artist working in glass and silk. After graduating from the University of the Arts in 2007 with dual majors in glass and material studies, Sara has continued to exhibit her work nationally and internationally. By combining blown, sandblasted glass and silk organza through a process of accumulation her texturally rich sculptures give a nod to traditional craftsmanship, while executing the work with a modern aesthetic. Her work is inspired by the natural world, in particular marine biology. She is also inspired by the traditional Japanese fiber arts technique of Shibori as well as the historic glassblowing process of the Venetians. Currently her work is represented by the Muse Gallery in Philadelphia and the Accent Gallery in Ocean City, NJ. Sara has also lent her skills as a designer for the sets and costumes of The International Opera Theater's Production of 'Decameron', which was performed in the US and Italy.
