Sue Grace is a contemporary painter who works with the critical notion of the picture plane. She holds a B.A in English from the University of Chicago and a certificate of completion from the National Academy of Design in New York City. Grace’s ideas at the beginning of making a painting provide the visual spark, but only that; the main work happens as her visual imagination responds to paint. To the flat picture plane Grace adds the elements of the materiality of the paint and a pattern or grid pattern that she then delights in counteracting with interruptions, slight nods to depth and emotional elements achieved through color, motion and marks. Her goal is a robust composition that expresses a personal response to paint just beyond the reach of words.
Grace lives in Arlington, Virginia and has her studio in Washington, D.C. Grace’s work has been reviewed in the Washington Post, East City Art and the Connection Newspaper. She has paintings in private collections in New York, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Illinois and Maryland. Her exhibitions include the Hillyer Art Space in Washington, DC, McLean Project for the Arts, Workhouse Art Center (where she was a resident artist and was awarded the Director’s Collection Award), Target Gallery, Crossroads Gallery, Northern Virginia Community College, and the Florence Trust in London, England.
