After receiving a B.A. degree in photography from The George Washington University in 1990, Amy ventured to Maine for a summer at the Maine Photographic Workshops. She then returned to D.C. in the fall to begin her photographic career at a professional photography lab.
In 1992, Wilton took a job as an au pair for a year in Bavaria, Germany. When she returned to the United States, in 1993, she worked as a photography studio assistant and rowing coach, while also fulfilling freelance photographic assignments, including work for American Rowing Magazine and Tennis Magazine, and also began photographing weddings.
Wilton returned to Maine to begin Rockport College’s M.F.A program in 1997, where she also taught classes to the Certificate, Associate Degree and Community programs. Her thesis project, a large scale, interactive installation, called “A Woman’s Place”, completed in February 2000, addressed issues that woman living in our modern society must face.
After her graduation Amy started Amy Wilton Photography, which specializes in advertising, editorial and personal portrait and wedding photography. Her images have been seen in many local and national magazines including Rolling Stone. Amy’s high-end weddings have taken her up and down the eastern seaboard, from Bar Harbor to Martha’s Vineyard, and also to Chicago, New York and France.
Amy taught photography at the Riley School from 2007-2009, and in the fall of 2008 her first book, A Passion for Sea Glass, Down East Press, was published. She also has a self-published book of personal work called A Child Within. She is currently represented by Vox Photographs, Portland, Maine.
She currently lives with her husband, two cheeky children and their two cats in Hope, Maine and spends her free time playing with her kids, hiking with her husband or rowing and training for triathlons.
