Stories from Classical mythology have pervaded European culture.
Myths reflect, reinforce and influence our gender ideologies.
I am interpreting and retelling mythology from a third wave feminist perspective.
I do this in the form of detailed, photo realistic, yet stylized, figurative oil paintings on canvas.
Some of my paintings feature models that portray characters from Classical Greek mythology with contemporary attributes. Lately I have focused on reappropriating former sculptors work by painting sculptures from Hellenistic Greece through the Neoclassical movement. I view and paint these sculptures, or retellings of myth through my own feminist lens and pair them with re-contextualized images of flowers that together reflect themes about gender politics, such as inequality and violence against women.
