JANAI-AMI
JANAI-AMI was born in the United States in NYC and is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work includes painting, ceramics, photography and writing. She began painting following 9/11 and found a deep connection to the creative visual arts. Her artwork can be found in museums and corporate and private collections on four Continents. Known by many as a "colorist," her work shows a clear fascination with texture as she often explores the use of her chosen medium to sculpt instead of paint. But confusing her technique with “impasto” misses the point entirely, as often the most three-dimensional surfaces are not impasto at all but rather are composed of thin layers somehow elevated in space. This technique is completely novel, testing the limits of the medium and for the first time, blurring the line between painting and sculpture. Once recognized for what it is, It could spawn a movement among painters or sculptors, with the possibilities seemingly endless. If that happens, she feels things will have come full circle, because she attributes her fascination with painting a picture in the form of a sculpture to the work of Asian artists she became familiar with as a child, among them the great sculptors from both Japan and China. Janai-Ami currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
