Julie Lipa

In the 1970s Julie Lipa grew up garbage picking in the alleys of Detroit. Today she is a self-taught upcycle artist based in Los Angeles. She makes Mid-Century Modern Mixed Media using vintage TVs and other appliances, photo transfer collage, often paired with a disproportionately-sized sinister 1950s spokesmodel coated in resin. Her work provides a basis for social commentary on the hypocrisy of 1950s consumerism, sexism, racism and other contradictions to the period’s claim of “the good old days.” Each piece is branded with an individually numbered metal Lipalux nameplate.
