Lamar Jones, b. 1989, self taught artist from Baltimore Maryland, specializes in blending pop-realism with expressionism. He works predominantly in the medium of painting, using acrylics on canvas. Jones is known for his unique style of creating mixed media pieces using vintage comic paper on canvas, embellished with gold leaf, diamond dust, and crystallized under a clear glass like resin. With a diverse taste in style and skill, he is not the type of artist that can be boxed into one category. His concepts touch the fragility of life and the beauty of nature against the soulless uniformity of the urban world. Inspiring through art activism, his most recent work gives an abstract interpretation on politics and societal issues, such as police brutality and women's rights. Jones has exhibited nationally from Washington, D.C. to Chelsea, NYC, and Chicago.
I like to manipulate the familiarity of characters, to give the art a nostalgic feeling. At the same time, twist the suggestive narrative to a visceral topic, to create a mature conversational piece, that may appear "juvenile" otherwise. My work is influenced by more contemporary art, although I admire the masters. For me, it is more about the vibe of the art. Art should not just be critiqued on skill, but the skill of expression. I make art for the love of love.
