Melissa McCutcheon

I am an oil painter originally from Seattle, WA who has recently relocated to the Washington, D.C. area after six years living in Brooklyn, New York. I received my Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Washington University in St. Lous in 1999 and currently teach painting and drawing at The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD as well as George Washington Unversity in Washington, D.C. My paintings are an examination of the sense of identity associated with displacement and its relationship to one’s cultural and socio-political context. Each painting consists of an abstracted landscape that symbolizes the memory of the landscapes I have travelled throughout developing nations in the Caribbean, Asia and Eastern Europe over the past 13 years.
