Melanie Furtado is a sculptor from the westcoast of Canada. Her sculptures revolve around the representation of the human body - be it through portraits, fragments, solitary individuals or groups of figures. The inital work always begins in clay, as the sculpture is shaped by hand from direct observation. When the modeling is complete, the work is transformed into different elemental materials such as cast glass, lost-wax bronze or fired clay. Each process has different properties and long traditions of technique that add to the narrative of the sculpture.
She seeks to explore the human experience and our relationships to each other and to ourselves through the use of body position, volume and space.
