Marcia Stuermer is a San Francisco multi-media artist who uses translucent resin as a primary medium to create her alluring artwork. Driven by an obsession for sustainability and a knack for alchemy, Stuermer often repurposes resin remnants from her company’s production of large-scale projects with other unexpected elements and custom resin castings to craft her intricate work.
Informed and inspired by the duality of nature + technology, she riffs on the ubiquitous graphic of our contemporary, consumer-based world in her ‘barcode’ series via compositional strata of sheer and textural resins. Whether in her studio practice or with her private and public art commissions, the elements of surprise, wonder and unforeseen beauty are central to her work.
Stuermer uses her fascination with scientific inquiry of the natural, technological, chemical, and biological worlds to unveil underpinnings that she feels have a particular relevance to our contemporary milieu and many of her works are interspersed with detailed ink drawings that imbue undercurrents of wry commentary on contemporary situations and issues.
Marcia, originally from Ohio, attended Cooper School of Art and the Cleveland Art Institute, before getting her degrees in sculpture and drawing from the Kansas City Art Institute. She has an extensive exhibition record and is in numerous private collections as well as the public collections of such entities as the Sacramento International Airport, Capitol One, Visa Corporation and Rabobank.
