What most people do not understand is that art is an entire branch of knowledge; it is not simply paper cut-outs and finger painting. Creating and producing art is a large part, but art as a subject teaches criticism, history, self reflection, and so much more. Art in schools teach students the importance of making choices with a resolve, deliberateness, and having the ability to back up as well as stand up for their decisions. These qualities can be applied to any discipline because it gives student their own voice. Artists put a little of themselves in every piece they create, and as they develop their own style and process they further refine that voice.
Art is a form of self expression; it stimulates creativity, and allows students to present their ideas in a new way. Creative thinking is an extremely valued quality in the adult world, especially jobs focused on innovation. Such creativity can not be explored in math; such unbounded thought can only be accessed in art class. Not having this creative outlet in the school system could be stunting an entire generation of animators, designers, and directors. Parents are so blinded by paychecks that they do not see that there is an entire job market for creative thinkers.
