anita thacher

Anita Thacher is a New York-based artist known primarily for her multimedia installations, public art, short films and video as well as her paintings, photographic and print works. Her art explores issues of perception both spatial and personal. Memory, childhood and domestic themes are primary in the work. While densely layered both visually and aurally, the work has simplicity and humor.
A retrospective of her work was presented at the XXX Internationale Festival di Femme, Florence, Italy in 2008. National and international exhibitions include five New York Film Festivals, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Jeu de Paume, France, and the Sculpture Center, New York. Her film work was included in the Whitney Museum, American Century 1950-1999 exhibition. She is the recipient of the New York Women in Film and Television Preservation Fund Grant for her film, Homage to Magritte. Her permanent public artwork, Illuminated Station, competitively selected by M.T.A. Arts for Transit, Long Island Rail Road Station, Greenport, NY, 2005 and the illuminated photographic installation, Metropolitan Shadows, Newark Museum, NJ. features the medium of light. Her prints are in the collection of the Rutgers Archive for Printmaking at the Zimmerli Art Museum.
Ms. Thacher is a MacDowell Colony Fellow, former member of its Board and a Civitella Ranieri Fellow Italy
