A native of S. Carolina, Amos Johnson,also known as "Ashanti" emerged from a family of artists. Raised in Syracuse, NY, Johnson began earning critical recognition of his artistic gift at age 12. Educated in public schools of Syracuse, Johnson continued his schooling at Syracuse Univ.. During his years at Syracuse, Johnson was an artist in residence which gave rise to a senior group exhibit with his brothers, Richmond & Tru Johnson at the Everson Museum in Syracuse.
After college, Ashanti was beckoned to return South, relocating to Atlanta. Being recognized for his portraiture skills, he executed & presented Mayor Maynard Jackson's inaugural portrait. A prolific member of the Neighborhood Arts Center family, he was sole muralist for the Shrine of the Black Madonna's "Madonna & Child" installation. Among other murals, Johnson was lead muralist on "The Wall of Respect-Atlanta" & recently "The Emmaus House Mural".
An internationally noted Master Artist, Johnson's work is found globally in private & public collections, including Atlanta's The High Museum; The Everson Museum; The George Washington Carver Museum, Austin, TX; The Paul R. Jones Collections at The Univ. of Delaware & The Univ. of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL; The One Africa Museum of History, Iture, Ghana and in the Superior & State Courts of DeKalb County, Georgia.
