Courtney Applequist is an interdisciplinary artist working in the greater Washington DC area. Her work explores a range of media, navigating the possibilities of painting and drawing using architecture as a foundational framework. Exploring a range of media, it asserts a visualization of movement, time, and the debris as a consequence of it. With a deep interest in the use of portraiture as an examination of an individual and their context, she is exploring the possibilities that form offers, expanding ideas of identity and the relationship of materiality.
“ We are, as a society, in a moment of shifting landscapes and structures, socially, politically, institutionally, spiritually, and we are finding new footing. As an artist, I am privileged & challenged to reflect this exploration, both collective & personal, through a practice that encourages dialogue rather than statements. “
Courtney is a co-founding member of the ICEbox Collective, a multimodal artist group whose work fosters critical thought and dialogue across cultural boundaries through a collaborative social art practice. She holds a BFA from Baylor University and has exhibited domestically & internationally, most recently FIAC Art Fair, Paris 2021 in collaboration with Edgar Endress, SXSW in Austin, TX, and Transformer in Washington DC. Her work with ICEbox Collective received the AIR Grant from ArtsFairfax, Virginia, was published in ArtMargins, MITPress, and exhibited at the Embassy of the Czech Republic, Transformer DC, and the Mexican Cultural Institute, Washington DC.
