David Carmack Lewis

David Carmack Lewis (born 1965) is a contemporary American painter and muralist wandering back and forth across the boundaries between fact and fiction, obsessing over personal narratives about landscape, science, myth and the power of metaphors to elicit unsuspected meanings. Born and raised in Virginia, he has also lived in New York City, Maine, Arizona, Wales and Namibia, before finally settling down in Portland, Oregon.

Mr. Lewis' oil paintings have won numerous awards and been widely exhibited in Museums, Art Centers and Galleries across the American West and beyond. He has painted large exterior murals for public and private entities throughout the United States. His work has been supported by grants from The Ford Family Foundation, The Oregon Arts Commission and The Regional Arts and Culture Council.

His 2017 mural "The Big Backyard" in Boise, Idaho was included in Parade Magazine's survey of the best murals in each state alongside works by Sol LeWitt, Joan Miró and Keith Haring. In 2019 a survey of his work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Coos Art Museum in Oregon after twice winning first place in their annual "Expressions West" show.

In December, 2023 he published a collection a 13 Ekphrastic poems based on his artwork by the French poet Michel Lagrange (born 1941), an Officer of Arts and Letters in France and a Knight of the National Order of Merit. The collaboration with Mr. Lagrange continues.
