Viktor Frešo is a Bratislava based artist, widely exhibited and collected throughout Europe. One of the most remarkable figures of the contemporary art scene in the region of the former Czechoslovakia, Frešo’s brand is based on a broad thematic scope saturated with provocation and sharp observations.
The artist creates sophisticated concepts and projects that he presents as seemingly simple, and finished “art pieces”. All the same, they never cease to reflect the current affairs. Frešo is often critical in his work and aggressively expresses his contempt of the art scene and its mechanism, which he balances out with a light, humorous and playful undertone. His approach is direct, efficient, employing visual tools and punching gestures. Whether he intervenes in a public space or exhibits in galleries, an immediate creative action shows itself in the process.
Bashfulness is foreign to the artist, who never misses a chance to publicly present his radical opinions. One might however contemplate about the artist’s intent- is it a desire to provoke a discussion and to point out the limits of contemporary art, or is it a mere demonstration of a self-centered affect?
Such ambiguity belongs to the comprehensive list of Frešo’s strategies. One of the most fascinating elements of his creation is the ostensible emphasis on huge, grandiose ego presented with disarming self-ironic humility. His ability to reveal the dark sides of his soul, his sins and misdemeanors, and throw them to the world regardless of consequences raises the question about the real motives in the artist’s work.
