Helen Evans Ramsaran was born in Bryan, Texas. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education (1965) and a Masters of Fine Art in sculpture (1968) from Ohio State University, where she studied bronze casting under David Black and welding with John Freeman. Ramsaran has taught at John Jay College of the City University of New York, Florida A&M University, and Bowie State University in Maryland. She studied photography at the New School for Social Research in New York, and anatomical drawing at the Art Students League in New York.
Ramsaran’s solo exhibitions include the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, New York, the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia, the American Museum of Natural History, New York, New York; Wilmer Jennings Gallery at Kenkeleba House, New York, New York; Taller Boricua, New York, New York; Abrons Art Center, New York, New York; Sculpture Center, New York, New York; and MoMA PS1, Queens, New York. Her work is in the following public collections: Ohio State University, the Sheldon Museum, and the Mead Art Museum, among others. Ramsaran splits her time between New York and Europe.
