Hilary Lorenz

Born in the Midwest and a resident of New York City for the past 19 years, Lorenz uses wilderness hiking to investigate ritual and rhythm that test physical and psychic boundaries as the interplay for her works on paper.

Lorenz recently completed an ARTS Tasmania International Art and Culture Residency, Tasmania, Australia, and has been awarded grants and fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation; the NEA-MidAtlantic Foundation; the Miskolc Museum of Contemporary Art, Hungary; and the Lower East Side Printshop, New York and many others. Selected solo exhibition include Muriel Guepin Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, Pfizer, Inc., NYC, SafeTGallery, Brooklyn; Santa Fe Art Institute, New Mexico; Taiwan Museum of Art; and Hunterdon Museum of Art, New Jersey.

Lorenz has received residencies including C-Scape Winter Residency, Provincetown, MA; the Frans Masereel Centrum, Belgium; Santa Fe Art Institute, NM; The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Ox-Bow; and Manhattan Graphics and Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, New York. Her artwork has been reviewed in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Art in America, and Art on Paper. Lorenz received her MA and MFA from the University of Iowa in printmaking and multimedia. She is an Associate Professor specializing in printmaking and digital media and the Chairman of Visual Arts Department at Long Island University, Brooklyn, NY.

Most recently Lorenz performed in the 54th Venice Biennale. As a member of USATF she was selected to run on top artists' Allora and Calzadilla "Track and Field" sculpture in the American Pavilion of the exhibition.

Lorenz received her M.A. and M.F.A. degrees from the University of Iowa. She is currently an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at Long Island University where she is also Chairman of the Department. Lorenz splits her time between New York City and Abiquiu, New Mexico.
