Ilan Averbuch

Ilan Averbuch is an American artist born in Israel. He studied art at Wimbledon School of Art in London before moving to New York in 1980 to complete his studies at the School of Visual Arts (BFA 1982) and Hunter College (MFA 1984). In 1985 he received the prestigious DAAD Berlin Program Award, which led to a year creating and exhibiting work in Germany. Upon returning to the United States he moved to his present home and studio in Long Island City, New York, and maintained an international exhibition schedule while teaching at the School of Visual Arts and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Averbuch continues to show in galleries and museums worldwide while he concentrates on large-scale public projects. His work has been included in numerous one-man shows, group shows and projects throughout the USA, Canada, Israel, Switzerland, Germany and India, including a mid-career retrospective at the Tefen Museum in Israel.
Averbuch creates sculptures that pose fundamental questions about our search for identity in the late twentieth century and early twenty first century. His landmark works help create identities for many different kinds of places, including university campuses, public parks, technical schools, medical centers, a recreation center, transit stations, a supreme court, corporate plazas, a sports arena, and a fire station.
