Karen Connell was born in Chicago in 1970. She earned a BA from DePauw University and an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design.
Using photography, installation and video projections, she creates simulated worlds. Connell plays with the slippage between what we desire and what actually exists. She creates non-places: images that appear real, but are, in fact, simulations.
The work is meant to isolate and emphasize the desire for the other, which is, in the end, just a creation.
She has exhibited widely. Venues include: Delaware Art Museum, Beaver College Art Gallery, Louisiana State University, The Print Center, The Lincoln Center, San Francisco State University, Abington Art Center and Macy Gallery at Columbia.
Recently, she gave a TEDx talk discussing her work and its relation to identity and technology in the world.
