Laurie Frick is a data artist exploring the bumpy future of data captured about us. We’re almost thru the decade when humans shift from mysterious beings - to big data algorithms, where everything about us will be known. Rather than worry, Frick envisions a time when personal data is a peek into our unique identity and just possibly a glimpse into our future.
Using her background in high-technology Frick uses color and intently hand-built works to explore a future when data and art are simultaneously combined to help us comprehend our data saturated lives. Her practice advocates data ownership with a frequent cry to ‘take back your data!’.
Her insights on the future of data are recently featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, Atlantic and Wired Magazine; she has been invited to talk at Google, Stanford and TEDx. Recipient of numerous residencies and awards, including Samsung Research and the University of Texas Neuroscience Center. She holds an MFA from the New York Studio School an MBA from University of Southern California and studied at NYU’s ITP program. In 2018 she built permanent data art installations at Facebook, CapitalOne, Downtown Austin, Texas A&M and Michigan State University. She shows in New York and Los Angeles, with an upcoming exhibition in 2019 at the Museum of Civilization in Quebec.
