The natural world has always played part in my abstract painting. I reside in Springs on the East End of Long Island, surrounded by the bay and the ocean, a community steeped in art history and home of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. I am in awe of the East End’s renowned natural wonders and quality of light, the heavy saturation of water in the air, holding the light. These elements enthuse my work as they have for generations of artists. Hiking the jagged seaside cliffs of Montauk near the Warhol Estate, brings me to an inspirational touchpoint. The rich tradition of the Abstract Expressionists, Willem de Kooning, Mary Abbott, Esteban Vicente, Joan Mitchell and Lee Krasner are ever-present. Wintering in South Florida, I am also inspired by its nature and indigenous elements— the verdant lushness of the Everglades to the bright brash artistic energy of South Beach. From Miami Botanical Garden to Fairchild, the Bird of Paradise and orchids on the street, and again, the bay meeting the ocean, water and sky. Seasons and weather differentiate Montauk and Miami but their landscape, connection to the water, history and culture similarly offer endless inspiration.
Thinking abstractly has opened many paths creatively. Recently, I have incorporated pattern in my practice by the simple act of repetition. Creating stencils, layered effects, overlays, grid layouts adding textural interest within a composition.
My process encourages change. Having honed technique early in representational, figurative and landscape work I have organically welcomed, the expression in abstraction— Today I strive to have paint convey the primitive, handmade, aspect of painting itself— the action conveyed in a brushstroke can be enough.
The cohesive thread of my work is about the journey in the world and the studio. Making connections to my varied approaches and styles of work. As life unfolds, it bestows new places, new subjects, sensibilities— and I am, and continue to be, open to all. MP
