Neil Berkowitz

Neil Berkowitz is an elder emerging artist in Seattle. He studied photography at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, with later studio arts coursework at the New School and North Seattle College. (His broader education includes a B.A., summa cum laude, with honors and distinction in English and three years as Graduate Council Fellow in the Ph.D. program in English at SUNY at Stony Brook). After a long detour Neil reestablished his arts practice six years ago, concentrating on digital photography. Neil began dividing his time between photography and printmaking two years ago and has recently begun incorporating additional media. He looks forward to returning as an active volunteer in the digital media lab at Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle when it fully reopens.

2019 was Neil’s breakout year, with 46 works included in two solo shows, a group show with two other photographers, four juried shows, four publications, and a purchase by a large municipal collection. After a pandemic delay the productive flux of Neil’s practice continues. He is working on a commission for 750 square feet in two sites in a new branch of Seattle Children’s Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic, which is allowing him to follow his interest in composite photographic murals. Neil plans to work on his first sculptural installation at an upcoming residency and the current year has brought participation in nine exhibitions.
