NIKOLAOS Petras

I I have never had any formal art tuition and although I dreamed of becoming an artist, I became an architect instead, however, I have never stopped drawing, painting and creating. I do not have a particular style and this worried me for a while as I thought to be authentic, I had to have an easily identifiable style. I enjoy painting subject matter that is easily recognizable and has strong iconography (Coca-Cola bottles, Jackie O, Muhammad Ali). This is why pop art has a deep influence on me. I am inspired by Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat and Mark Rothko to name a few. Apart from pop-inspired work, I also try to be as realistic as possible in some of my work. I enjoy sketching portraits, especially faces that speak a thousand words, that are not stereotypical. I want to show the pain in a child’s eye and the hope in the face of someone who is pained and desperate. I prefer to sketch things as opposed to keeping a diary. These are what I refer to as my dreamscapes. I like to keep a record of things that my sub conscious has shown me before I forget them. Some people love my work while others would not hang it on their walls, and this is exactly why I persist and hope to keep creating as long as I can.
